Religion Poisons Everything…..

I want to say something on the subject of gay marriage: During our recent election, several states had propositions to ban same sex marriage. Most of these passed and effectively created a second class of US citizens in those states.

The chief objections to same sex marriage seem to be: Marriage is a religious institution, homosexuals are not deserving of the same rights as heterosexuals and the bible says that “gay is bad”.

Let me address these one by one from the top..

Marriage is as much a civil institution as is it is religious. You can be married civilly and you can file your taxes based on your marital status. Ipso facto marriage is about civil status.

Secondly: In the US the constitution guarantees equality for everyone, not just heterosexuals. EVERYONE. Read the constitution for clarification of this point.

Finally: The Bible is possibly the most bigoted poisonous document ever written. It was written by primitives who wanted to control other primitives. It is so vague and contradictory as to be completely discountable as a moral code and in fact advocates genocide, casual murder and the marginalization of anyone that disagrees with it’s frankly evil tenets.

If we truly believe in equality and freedom in the US we cannot by any standard discriminate. Preventing people from marrying because we dislike how they express themselves sexually is hypocritical and un-American. Would we prevent heterosexual couples who like sexual positions that some people see as deviant from being married? We would not.

At the foot of all this is Christianity. The home of Gentle Jesus, Meek and Mild and also the home of the largest coterie of narrow minded bigots in the western hemisphere. A radical hate machine that would impose it’s will on everyone, believers and non believers. Just as radical Islam seeks to impose it’s barbarity on the planet, so does evangelical Christianity. The language may differ but the hatred is the same.

We can never hold this country up as a  beacon of freedom until we let everyone be free.

jeez I need to lighten the fuck up..

O Beautiful…

What a night! I can hardly believe this day has actually arrived. Barack Obama is President Elect.

Highlights for me were: Duff being almost incomprehensibly blotto! Calling the election before the major networks on Chimpcasting :) …The moment that Obama exceeded 270…John McCain’s very gracious concession speech…Obama’s speech in Grant Park and the shots of the crowd there. The hugfest with Kathy, Duff Steve and Max when it was all over..

I wish I could actually express how this makes me feel. Suffice it to say I am very proud of the US today and guardedly optimistic about the future.

Much love to all :)

Endgame

Here it is. Tuesday Nov 4 2008. The election is in play as I write this. For Democrats this day may end the Republican stranglehold that has decimated the middle classes and left hundreds of thousands of human beings, both Americans and foreign nationals, dead. For Republicans, the likelihood of them holding the White House for another four years is slim at best.Their agenda of creating a “perpetual majority” seems to lie in ruins. We shall see.

For myself, my fervent hope, regardless of the outcome of the election, is that we all remember who our neighbours are. We all of us must still live our lives and go about our daily routines. We must pass each other in the grocery store, we must work together at our jobs and in many cases we must eat at the same table. We must forget the arguments, the name-calling and the anger and just move forwards.

Anyhoo.. I am hoping the night goes as planned and we go into Wednesday  with Barack Obama as President Elect. Fingers crossed!! I should be twittering all night and tonight’s Chimpcast will be in the thick of election coverage, which for us means drinking and laughing.
